Fuel suppliers in the area are having problems distributing gasoline to some retailers due to the gas pipeline break in Alabama that supplies much of the southeast. However, the fuel problem should not have a major impact on bus transportation for Floyd County Schools.
A fuel shipment was received late last week to restock the school system's diesel fuel supply so there should be no impact on bus transportation for children in the community.  Even though the school system has a good supply of diesel fuel at this time, changes are being implemented to conserve fuel to ensure the supply continues to be adequate until the fuel supply problem is corrected.

All out-of-county field trips scheduled for this week will be rescheduled.  Field trips planned within Floyd County will continue as planned.  Athletic events scheduled inside Floyd County and at locations in surrounding counties will continue as scheduled.  Competitions out of the area will be considered as the date for those events draw closer.  "We don't anticipate problems at this point, however, we are taking precautions and assessing the situation on a daily basis," commented Dr. April Childers, Deputy Superintendent of Floyd County Schools.
The system is also planning for more bus riders for parents not able to find fuel to drive children to school.  Parents who need bus stop locations and approximate times may call the Transportation Department for information at 706-236-1808.  Select extension 1 for regular education students and select extension 2 for information regarding special education students.

Other tips for parents during the shortage:
  • Parents who pick up children at school in the afternoon can reduce wait times by delaying their arrival for pickup in the afternoon just a few minutes.  The longest lines are encountered shortly before and at initial dismissal time for car riders. Generally, delaying arrival for pick-up as little as 10 minutes can significantly reduce wait times.
  • The system website is also a resource for bus stops and times.  You can find the closest stop and approximate times by clicking on School and Bus Search on the system website.
