Students in the marketing program at Pepperell High School gave a jolt of energy to the school with the opening of their new business called Caps and Grounds, a coffee shop located in the old school store site near the cafeteria.  The store was the brainchild of the students from the concept of tapping into the coffee shop craze of today's teens to the name that connected the venture with the school system's focus on Destination Graduation for every child.

Caps & Grounds is a new student-run premium coffee enterprise at Pepperell High School. Partnering with Swift and Finch, Caps & Grounds offers high-quality, fresh-brewed coffee each morning. "The crew running the operation has developed the space from the demolition of the old Dragonshack school store, designing the name and logo to installing the new decor," commented David Mowery, marketing instructor at Pepperell.  "The shop is designed to offer an authentic business experience to the students while providing a great service and product to the Pepperell community."

Ellie Mahon and Mark McLucas of Swift and Finch, a successful local coffee shop in Rome, have worked with the students to develop their coffee products.  The local entrepreneurs have also shared their knowledge of product resources and customer focus that makes their business successful.  Both were on hand for the grand opening of the Pepperell coffee shop.

Caps and Grounds is operated by eight students and they are using the experience to learn about marketing, systems management, customer service, and inventory control. Mowery added, "The shop is decorated in a "coffee-house" style and took cues from the culture and history of the Pepperell area."  Crew members of Caps and Grounds include Hinton Bolinger, Jesse Burkhalter, Gracie Hufford, Kaylee Mansell, Rachel Phipps, Hannah Newberry, Micayla Goodgame, & Baylie Gossett.

Currently, Caps & Grounds is offering two roasts of coffee, a medium "House" roast and a dark "Dragon Roast", and also other cold beverages and snacks.  As the operation expands, there are also plans to diversify the menu to include popular items such as iced coffee, lattes, and seasonal flavors.

Caps and Grounds is a huge hit with the teens at Pepperell and the young marketing moguls are selling out their stock just about every morning.  The coffee shop is open from 7:15 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. each morning school is in session.
