Floyd County teachers, Brandi Crider, band director at Model Middle School; Emily Threlkeld, music teacher at Garden Lakes Elementary School; and Jenifer Beaver, music teacher at Armuchee Elementary School have been elected to state and district level positions with the Georgia Music Educators Association (GMEA).
For the 2016/17 school year, Brandi Crider will serve as a Steering Committee member and District VII Secretary for the band division. Jenifer Beaver will serve as the District VII Elementary Chairperson. Emily Threlkeld will serve as the Elementary Chairperson at the state level for GMEA.
The Georgia Music Educators Association is one of fifty-one state affiliates of the National Association for Music Education. GMEA was founded in 1938 and has been active in music education in Georgia continuously since that time. With the mission of promoting the advancement of music education in Georgia, GMEA sponsors conferences for teacher members, providing continuing education and professional growth opportunities.
For students of members, GMEA provides performance evaluations for individuals and ensembles including band, choral and orchestra students at the elementary, middle and high school levels. GMEA also provides all state events from the elementary through college level. Over 20,000 students and 2,000 bands participate in the events. The Georgia Music Educators Association has the fifth largest membership among state music education associations in the United States.
