Coosa Middle School has won the 2016 Floyd County Academic Quiz Bowl for middle schools to displace a Model Middle team that had won the last two competitions.  The Model Middle team finished second. The Academic Quiz Bowl is a county-wide academic competition and this year the event was held at Berry College on Wednesday, March 9.
Coosa Middle took first in the competition with a total of 1,620 points for the day.  Model Middle did not win a grade level but scored high enough in each section to finish second with 1,390 points.  Armuchee Middle rounded-out the overall top three with a total of 1,350 points for third place.
Sixth, seventh, and eighth-grade gifted students from all four county middle schools take part in the annual Quiz Bowl.  This is the 14th year students have competed to show their academic talent in math, literature, vocabulary, science, history and geography.

The middle school competition is also divided into grade levels with champions crowned in the sixth, seventh and eighth-grade.  Pepperell Middle School took top honors in the sixth-grade competition, Coosa Middle won for seventh-grade and Armuchee Middle added the eighth-grade title.

The quiz bowl competitions were started to promote student academic growth in problem solving, critical thinking, communication skills, and advanced research skills. The activities also promote leadership and provide motivation for students to excel in academics. The Quiz Bowls are local school system events with no region or state competitions.

"Developers of the program sought to provide middle school gifted students with an activity to prepare them to participate in academic competitions at the high school level and also showcase their academic talents," stated McCall Govignon, director of advanced academic programs for Floyd County Schools.

Coosa Middle School team members included:
Eighth-grade team: Kara Middleton, Kaleb Wright, Phoebe Harley, Tristan Davis, Erin Vescovi, Brinley Smith, and John Googe.

Seventh-grade team: Zayden Sullins, Davis Yeargan, Chloe Vann, Jorge Castillo, William Hodges, Keniy"ven Neal, and Emma Bartlett.
