College and Career Academy is one of Georgia's Top Performers

The Floyd County Schools College and Career Academy was recognized on Thursday as one of the top performing career academies in Georgia at a gathering of the career academies hosted by Golden Isles Career Academy in Brunswick.  This was the third consecutive year the Floyd County charter career academy has earned this distinction.  The honor was announced by Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle during his eighth annual Business and Education Summit that concluded today.
Floyd County Schools College and Career Academy was a finalist for the College and Career Academy of the Year in Georgia with the host school, Effingham Career Academy, and Houston County Career Academy.  Houston took the top honor for the year.  The schools were recognized for excellence in STEM education, innovation in teaching strategies, dual enrollment opportunities for students, and collaboration with community and business partners.  

Georgia Power was also recognized as one of the top business partners of the year in Georgia for their work with the Floyd County Schools College and Career Academy. Eric Waters, CEO of the Floyd County Schools Career Academy, accepted the awards for his staff and the community business partners that make the school a success.  

The school works closely with Georgia Power, Oglethorpe Power, Floyd Medical Center, Redmond Regional Medical Center, Harbin Clinic, F& P Georgia, Profile Extrusion and the Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce to provide options that are relevant for students and the needs of the community. The school also works with Georgia Northwestern Technical College, Georgia Highlands, and Berry College to provide post-secondary opportunities and dual enrollment for students.

The Floyd County Schools College and Career Academy has also been recognized as a Ford Next Generation School and math teacher, Dr. Brian Swanagan, received the 2014 Innovation in Teaching Award from Governor Nathan Deal. 

The Business and Education Summit brings business, industry and education leaders together to discuss the importance of the manufacturing industry in Georgia and the role education plays in business and industry success.
