Three math teachers from Floyd County Schools presented their work at a state math conference last month to help other teachers across the state teach math concepts to children.  Dr. Robbie Vincent, a third grade teacher at Pepperell Elementary and Angela Lacey Hester, a math teacher at Coosa High School, presented strategies for math vocabulary and Jennifer Greer, math facilitator for Floyd County Schools, presented the systems Math Tutor program and a new Advanced Algebra course.   The teachers shared their math instruction knowledge at the 55th Georgia Mathematics Conference held at the Rock Eagle 4-H Center in Eatonton, Georgia.
The session demonstrated by Vincent and Hester provided research-based methods for teaching math vocabulary to all students, especially those who struggle with reading.  The two helped the teacher participants to develop ways to include language-based activities into math lessons.  Some of the methods were: math word walls, vocabulary lessons, games and music to connect language concepts and math.  The session focused on exploring the connection between low reading comprehension skills and weak math problem solving.  The strategies discussed ways teachers could assist children with reading disabilities.

Greer shared the very successful Math Tutor program that provides assistance to teachers, students and parents on the school system's website.  Over half a million visits have been logged into the math resource area on the website.  The popular program is not just a resource for Floyd County seekers of math assistance.  Visitors from across the country have responded positively to the math resources provided by Floyd County Schools.  The new algebra course presentation was in cooperation with the Georgia Department of Education.  The session highlighted the main concepts of the course featured in a two-day training provided in Georgia over the summer.  Greer co-authored the professional teacher training used for the new course.
