Dr. Glenn White, principal of Model High School, has been elected president of the Georgia High School Association (GHSA). He was elected at the semiannual meeting of the State Executive Committee of GHSA on April 14 in Macon. White was elected by a unanimous vote of the 58 member State Executive Committee. "It is an honor and a privilege to serve as president of the GHSA," stated Dr. White. "I am seeking the advice and help of coaches, administrators and parents as we begin to make changes in the association to help GHSA adapt to meet the needs of students in Georgia."
GHSA is a composed of over 400 public and private high schools in Georgia. The organization sets eligibility standards for high school athletes, rules for participation for schools, safety standards for high school athletics, classifications for regions, administers region and state sporting events, oversees officials, provides training for coaches and officials and promotes good sportsmanship and a cooperative spirit among its member schools. Dr. White has been 7AA GHSA representative for 17 years. He has served on the Board of Trustees, as chairman of the Eligibility Committee and on the Reclassification Committee. "It is important for GHSA to find new ways to involve more students in extracurricular activities," White said. "Research supports the fact that students who are involved are more likely to graduate from high school." He added, "The goal of all schools and the GHSA is for all students in the state to graduate from high school."
Dr. White's term as president of GHSA will begin on July 1, 2014. He is looking forward to the challenge of leading one of the state's most influential organizations. "GHSA is facing many new challenges as our schools and the population of our state undergoes changes," White said. "The GHSA will be exploring the eligibility requirements for students as schools change the method in which academic credits are earned." The group will also be undertaking a restructuring of regions in the next reclassification period in the 2016-2017 school year. More change is also slated for GHSA as Gary Phillips will be taking over as executive director in July.
Dr. White is replacing long time GHSA President Dr. Gary Holmes of Brunswick, Georgia. Dr. Holmes is himself a Model High School graduate and he was also a principal in Floyd County Schools at Pepperell High School.
