Layton Hayes photoLayton Hayes, a senior at Coosa High School, has been a highly decorated student over the last four years but he added a special title recently when he was selected as the STAR Student for Floyd County Schools.  Hayes earlier earned the STAR award for Coosa High School to qualify him for the system award.  The Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) award, sponsored by the Georgia Chamber of Commerce; the Georgia Department of Education and the Professional Association of Georgia Educators, is presented to a high school senior with the school’s highest SAT score and ranking in the top ten percent of the school’s senior class. Each STAR student selects a STAR Teacher in the recognition program.

Hayes selected science teacher Bill Daughtry as his STAR Teacher and both were honored at the STAR recognition luncheon held by the Exchange Club of Rome.  Al Hodge, executive director of the Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce was master of ceremonies for the event.  Hodge said, "This is to celebrate academic excellence, symbolized by these very bright students."

Hayes has been involved in numerous advanced academic programs during his high school career at Coosa High. He was recognized as an AP Scholar and honored by the National Honor Society. He was a Commended Student in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship program.  Hayes has been a member of the Coosa Academic Decathlon Team where he was team MVP as a sophomore, junior and senior and was individual high scorer in the county competition as a senior. He also placed at the state decathlon competition. Hayes participated on the Coosa High math team, and cross country team. He was an Optimist Student of the Month and an alternate to Governor's Honors.

Hayes has not decided on his college of choice but he has many options.  His finalists are the University of Georgia and the Georgia Institute of Technology with Georgia holding a slight lead at this point.  He plans to study chemistry and psychology and possibly become a psychiatrist.
