Spelling Champion

Zayden Sullins, a fifth grader at Garden Lakes Elementary, confidently spelled all words thrown at him at the Floyd County Schools Spelling Bee to repeat as the spelling champion for the school system.  The system’s annual Spelling Bee, was held on Monday, February 3, 2014, at 9:00 a.m., at the Floyd County Board of Education office on Riverside Parkway.  The spelling competition is usually dominated by middle school students but Sullins proved that last year as no fluke and retain his spelling title. Sullins was the first fourth-grader to win the title in 10 years when he came out on top in last year's contest.  Sullins and 10 other individual school spelling champions participated in the Floyd County Schools Spelling Bee. Hannah Moore, a fifth-grade student from Cave Spring Elementary School, was the runner-up in the competition.

The final round moved quickly with Moore faltering on the word “perceived.” Sullins spelled the word correctly and then also handled “Herculean” to take the title. Finalists must spell two words in a row correctly to win the competition at the system level.  Prior to spelling the winning words, Sullins had easily spelled Dodecahedron in the competition. When asked about how quickly and confidently he spelled the word, Sullins said, "I remembered seeing Dodecahedron as I was studying for the Spelling Bee.  A video of the winning words can be viewed at:

Sullins said that he spent a lot of time studying words to get ready to compete in the academic spell-off.  He also said that he used his time out of school last week due to snow to study. Sullins said, “My parents helped me study by letting me know when I misspelled a word in practice."

For his first-place finish, Sullins received a plaque and certificate recognizing his accomplishment. He will represent Floyd County Schools in the District Spelling Bee to be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 1 at the Floyd County Board of Education office. Hannah Moore will serve as an alternate at District. The District Spelling Bee will feature the top spellers in the Northwest Georgia area.
